As the Israelites stand at the bottom of Mount Sinai awaiting Moses' return with the Law, the men become disheartened and believe Moses will never return. They build a Golden Calf and worship it as the god who redeemed them. The text tells us that the women did not participate in building the Golden Calf or in worshipping it. As a reward for this, the women are entrusted with commemorating the new moon, which designates the start of a new month, Rosh Chodesh. The belief is that since commemorating the new moon is so concrete, there is a worry that it too could become a false god. The women have proved themselves trustworthy in this regard and the moon is safe in their hands. It is customary for women not to work on Rosh Chodesh and to gather together with other women to celebrate the new month.
Exodus 12:2 introduces the commandment of observing the New Moon: 'This month is for you the first of months'. Numbers (10:10, 28:11) puts Rosh Chodesh on par with other festivals.
The women heard about the construction of the Golden Calf and refused to submit their jewelry to their husbands. Instead, they said to them: 'You want to construct an idol and mask which is an abomination and has no power of redemption. We won’t listen to you.' And the Holy One, blessed be He, rewarded them in this world in that they would observe the New Moons more than men, and in the next world in that they are destined to be renewed like the New Moons.
Pirke DeRabbi Eliezer, 45
It is a custom for women not to do work on Rosh Chodesh. This is a beautiful custom.

Ancient Women
Deborah
The Torah portion, Shoftim, begins with the statement that there should be judges and police within any city. The book of Judges describes a great judge and warrior, a woman named Deborah.
The text describes Deborah as a prophet and a judge but when the general of Israel, Barak, refuses to go into battle without her, Deborah assumes the role of warrior who ultimately leads Israel to victory.
