Mussar Continues

A six (6) part interactive lecture series. This class is an ongoing study of mussar, the system of ethical behaviour within Judaism. We split our time between text study and personal observations. The texts include Torah, Talmud and Chassidic legends as our case studies. The process of mussar is to give each person a method through which to improve their lives, reduce their stress and ultimately heal the world.

The Book of Ruth

We will also discuss the growth of formalized conversion to Judaism that builds on the model Ruth initiates. This course is an interactive series focusing on the Mishnah texts from Pirkei Avot. Sometimes technical, sometimes whimsical but always meaningful, these texts contain the opinions, viewpoints and advise recorded by the Sages to be foundations for timeless Jewish discussions. Who is the wise person? What does wealth really mean? How much casual discussion with a woman is too much and why? These texts become gateways into our own opinions as well as windows into an ancient reality. We will add materials to our classes on the lives of the particular Sages, their wives, families and their world

As the Israelites journey through the wilderness and are camped at Sinai, the moment of great spiritual height, the Revelation at Sinai, also contains the moment of great spiritual betrayal, the Golden Calf. In this twelve part series, we will study this text and bring in Talmud and Midrash that outline the women's role in this event and how Rosh Chodesh, the new moon, has become their trusted keepsake. From Torah through Talmud and beyond, we will study questions of Judaism, women and spirituality.

Heading to Sinai: From Slavery to...

The exodus from Egypt ended slavery but introduced a new set of problems. Now that the Israelites are headed for Sinai, food, shelter and protection become central issues. This ten part series explores these texts that help us identify Jewish questions of identity, evil and testing God. Whether it’s Manna from heaven or Miriam’s Well, the road to Sinai involves twists and turns filled with Torah moments of insight and female imagery.
